Silent Night Museum in the Pflegerschlössl

Joseph Mohr, clocks, questions about time & more

Close to the Karl Heinrich Waggerl Haus Museum, Joseph Mohr, the former pastor in Wagrain, and the song "Silent Night" created by him are now also commemorated. The Pflegerschlössl - an architectural jewel in the Baroque style - has been sensitively restored, made barrier-free and supplemented by a modern event centre.

Joseph Mohr

Joseph Mohr, vicar of Wagrain and author of a world-famous carol. Probably no other Christmas carol is as deeply rooted in people's consciousness as "Silent Night, Holy Night". Joseph Mohr, born in Salzburg in 1792, wrote this poem in 1816 and had it set to music by Franz Xaver Gruber to create an atmospheric Christmas carol. Since then it has been part of every Christmas ceremony.

In 1837 Joseph Mohr came to Wagrain. From then on, as parish vicar, he looked after the needy in the Wagrain-Kleinarl region and had a primary school built. Mohr died in 1848 in Wagrain, where he is also buried.
