AEROTHLON - Information for 2021 tba

The sports event with trail running, paragliding & mountain biking

It sounds like triathlon for air and mountain sports and that's all true. Because the Aerothlon combines trail running, paragliding and mountain biking. There is only one Aerothlon in Austria - namely the one in Wagrain-Kleinarl.

The first Aerothlon in Wagrain-Kleinarl was on August 30, 2020. The date for 2021 will be announced soon.

In contrast to other Hike & Fly events, the athletes fight alone, as a tandem team or in a relay team. Or you look for a partner in the Aerothlon exchange (when registering) :)

The starting possibilities are limited to 50 people.

Curious? Then sign up right away!

You can be with the athletes on the race day via live tracking.

All facts in one place:

Trail running, paragliding, mountain biking

The track for 2021 will be announced soon.

The Aerothlon starts with a trail running race. The athletes run from the sports field in Kleinarl to the Mooskopf. They pass the church and take the hiking path directly to Gasthof Pröll. There they continue to Gasthaus Galler. From now on the race goes diretissima under the bubble shuttle to the Mooskopf.

The paragliding route starts up there. If the weather is good, the Gründegg is a technically demanding turnpoint. The paragliders prove their skills. If the paragliders do not make it to the turnpoint, they land at the Hirschleiten field and cover the rest of the way according to the Hike & Fly principle. This means that the Gründegg has to be climbed on foot. This summit is the new point to start flying. In bad weather, the flight route is adapted to the current conditions.

The paragliders hand over or change their sports equipment again at the sports field in Kleinarl. The mountain bikers cycle over Steinegg and the Kreuzsalwald to the Gasthaus Galler. From there it goes down to the Brandstatt district. A short distance leads in the valley towards Wagrain. The mountain bikers turn into Sauwaldstraße towards the Kleinarler Hütte. The descent is over hill and dale at the Hirschleitentrail. They finsih at the sports field in Kleinarl.

You can follow the whole race via live tracking- regardless of whether you are excited about the event as a visitor or as a fan at home.

How it works:

In this competition you start either alone or in a team. For trail runners and mountain bikers it is also possible to find a tandem pilot - almost alone plus :)

As a lone fighter, you complete all three required disciplines. In the tandem team variant, the mountain runner runs to the handover to the paraglider and flies with the tandem pilot to the mountain bike route and then the runner takes over again and rides the mountain bike to the finish.

The relay team has a specialist for every discipline. They hand over to his teammate at the next transition zone.

Would you like to take part in the Aerothlon but don't have a team yet? No problem, when registering there is the option of registering as a team-seeking athlete without obligation and free of charge. We will then contact you and network all participants with other participants who are also looking for team members.

Women and men take part in this competition, mixed teams are also allowed. The relaxed competitive atmosphere makes this event unique.

There is a rating for the lone fighters, the tandem teams and the relay teams. A total of € 1,500 in prize money will be distributed. In addition to the prize money, the winners will receive a harness for a paraglider from Skywalk Paragliders and watches sponsored by SUUNTO.

The Aerothlon was held for the first time in 2013 in Malinalco in Mexico. At that time, 60 athletes from six different countries took part in different categories. Since then, the event has developed into an international series.

With the help of Paul Guschlbauer, we have now succeeded in bringing the Aerothlon to Wagrain-Kleinarl. Be there and register now
